The free programs that you can download

For every Webmaster it is important to control the activity of his site. The number of visitors that come to your site, the ranking of visits that a page receives, and who is sending you visitors, are three parameters that you must know and that you will get to know using the program FWTLogstat1. But there are also other data that are useful when managing a site: the number of requests that were made for each file in your site, which is the picture most downloaded, the total number of bytes that were served on a week or a month, and a lot of other meaningful items that would be too long to enumerate, can be obtained using the Web server log files and the program FWTLogstat2. These two programs can be downloaded completely free of charge using the links that you will find below. But perhaps you want to know a little more about what each program does before downloading, so go on reading.

FWTLogstat1 -- knowing your visitors and referrers

In reality, the program FWTLogstat1 is part of a pack of three software modules that, working all together, permit you to have an accurate count of the visitors to your site eliminating all the false visits made by the robots of the search engines. The other two parts are a JavaScript code that you must include in your pages to activate the tracking, and a Perl script that is installed in the "cgi-bin" directory of your site.

In the "Web Tracking Tutorial" section you will find easy to follow instructions that show you how to implement the two scripts that I mentioned. By simply inserting in the HTML code of your pages some JavaScript statements, you will be sending information to the Perl script that will write a text file logging when each page was visited and who did it.

Don't know anything about JavaScript and Perl scripts? Don't worry, everything is made for you, it is just a matter of copying and pasting. But, in case you want to know what you are doing, full explanations are given about these topics elsewhere in this site. Take a look at the left of this page. You will find in there links to pages that will teach you about HTML, JavaScript, Perl, and CGI. If you don't want to know about CGI, you don't need to! Just follow the instructions, and ask me if you have any trouble.

In this section you will able to download FWTLogstat1, the program to process the log file produced by the Perl script "trax.pl". It will give you the number of users that you received each day, how many times a page was seen each day, and also a ranking of referrers. Clicking the next link you will find instructions on how to install and use the program. Moreover, help is available by e-mail. You do not need any registration to receive help by e-mail.

Installing and Using FWTLogstat1

Do you already have statistics provided by your hosting company? Quite so, but do you know that many of the visits are of robots sent by the search engines? You can't know what are the real visitors if you do not use the approach I am explaining here. The only way to know the truth in these times when search engines are proliferating and access-log spam is becoming each day more common is by using the program you can download using this link.

Logstat2 -- analyzing your Apache server log files

If you want to get more in depth information about the requests made for each one of the files in your site, you can use FWTLogstat2, which uses the log files that any Apache Web server maintains for the sake of the site owner's information.

The Web pages that you offer to your visitors are served by a computer program called a Web server. The most common brand of Web server is Apache, a free program that you can even install in your home computer. One of the tasks of an Apache Web server is to log every access to each page and its ancillary files: pictures, style sheets, etc. The log file is an ordinary text file (in Unix format) that you can download to your computer and open with FWTLogstat2. See how easy is to install and use FWTLogstat2 by clicking the next link.

Installing and using FWTLogstat2

This powerful program that you can download without paying anything will save you countless hours in searching your log files, without mentioning that visual appreciation is sometimes misleading. Nothing can replace a good analyzing program. And you can have it! You will be able to know how many requests were made in a given day, week, or month, in weekdays or in weekends, all Tuesdays or from Wednesdays to Fridays, in a range of dates, etc. And this for each and every file in your site, or just for a directory, or just pictures, or just HTML or PHP files, etc.

Moreover, if you download FWTLogstat2, you are not only entitled to receive help on its use, as I mention before, but you will receive all upgrades that I make in the future!

In addition to this report, FWTLogstat1 provides you with two extremely usefult listings: Search Strings, and Search Engines. Search Strings lets you know the strings that people used in search engines to find your place. Search Engines lets you know the search engines that people used. Both listings are sorted in descending order so that you get the most used at the top.
