Installing and using FWTLogstat1

Installation for Windows XP

In Windows Explorer, select "Program Files". Create a new directory by selecting "File>New>Folder". Call it "Free Webmaster Tools" or the name you prefer. Move to this directory the ZIP file that you downloaded and de-compress it. Right click the file "logstat1.exe", and select the option "Create shortcut". Rename the new shortcut to "FWTLogStat1". Drag the shortcut to the desktop.

The program "logstat1.exe" is intended to process log files produced by the Perl script "trax.pl". If you don't know what is "trax.pl", please read the section on Web Tracking. I will suppose in this help article that you have installed "trax.pl", and have successfully downloaded the log file, which is usually called "trax-log.txt". FWTLogstat1 can show you how many hits received each one of the pages of your site. It also shows how many visitors and referrers you had in the logged period, and informs on the search strings and search engines used to reach your site.

Installation for Windows Vista and 7

Windows Vista and Windows 7 increase the security controls intended to fight malicious programs like spyware. The "Program Files" directory is no longer available to the standard user, and it is only available to an administrator user by recurring to what they call "elevation". So, to avoid unnecessary problems, I suggest that you create a special folder called, for instance, "Programs", under your user directory. If you are logged on as user "Bob", create a folder "\Bob\Programs" (or the name you want), and follow the instructions given for Windows XP using that directory instead of "Program Files".

Using the program

Double click on the desktop shortcut to open the program. A window named "Log File Statistics" appears. Click "File > Open", press Ctrl+O, or click the folder icon. A dialog box to open a file appears. Navigate to where your log file is and open it. The name of the file is shown in the status bar. The file is now selected, but it is not still processed.

Process the log file

Select the date format using this procedure. Click "Options > Settings...". In the window that appears you will see two radio buttons that correspond to the formats that dates may have in the log file (see picture below). One is the European format and the other the American Format. Select the correct one for the file that you just opened. Click "Ok".

Click "File > Process" or the arrow icon. The main window is now filled with your statistics, as seen in the picture below. In the picture, the name of the file is "log.txt". To view the listing, you can scroll it or you can resize the window.

Copying the analysis

By dragging the mouse, you can select a portion of the listing, or you can select all of it by clicking "Edit > Select All" (shortcut: Ctrl+A). You can then copy the selected text by clicking "Edit > Copy" or pressing Ctrl+C. The text is copied to the clipboard, and you can paste it into another application. You can achieve the same result by using the context menu (see picture below): click with the right button anywhere on the listing, and the context menu appears.

Saving the analysis

You can save the listing by choosing "File > Save As" (shortcut: F12), or by clicking the diskette icon. This option also appears in the context menu. This way you can save your statistics regularly under different names and use them to make comparisons. The listing is self-explanatory, but in case of doubt do not hesitate to mail me asking what you want to know.
